Art on paper is a classic art historical medium. In Europe graphic prints are known from the Renaissance in the fifteenth century whereas photography ranks among the more recent media.

Photography was invented in 1839 but did not attain its widespread recognition as art until the 1980s. It has subsequently become one of contemporary art's preferred media. Comprising a substantial part of ARKEN's Collection, photography is one of the museum's focus areas.

Since the mid-1990s the time-honoured media of graphics and drawing have been very fashionable, and many artists employ paper only.

ARKEN's acquisitions span a wide variety of photographic and graphic idioms from the 1980s and 1990s created by Danish and international artists.
