Atul Dodiya was born in 1959 in Mumbai, India, where he also lives and works today.
Atul Dodiya’s works mix both stylistic and iconographic references from the East and West. Classical myths, political history and references to western art history appear side by side, so that new meanings and expressions emerge.
Dodiya became known in the early 1990s for his hyper-realistic paintings that rendered Indian middle-class life. He then moved on to a wide-ranging choice of materials in which he would spray marble dust on works, use play tools as part of his installations, and, later on, start painting on window shutters. Dodiya’s work often scrutinizes the clash between personal and collective memory, between local and global experience.
