From the Greek eikon meaning image or resemblance. In the Eastern Orthodox Church the term is used of images of saints or depictions of Christ or the Virgin Mary which are considered sacred symbols.

In a broader sense icons signify familiar pictorial subjects functioning as signs of things or concepts.
