Lichtenstein, Roy
American artist (1923-97). In the 1960s Lichtenstein painted blow-ups of well-known comic book panels in which he included all the characteristic aspects of the original cheap colour print, viz the stark colours, sharp contours and the dotted half-tones.

Removed from their original context of the comic books, the pictures and the text in the speech bubbles are invested with another artistic and critical meaning.
