KATHARINA GROSSE

THE ROOMS OF ART

Katharina Grosse creates almost psychedelic artistic rooms that encourage the viewer to think new thoughts. This happens both in her paintings and when she paints the exhibition space itself over in bright spray-paint colours.

Description of the work

Grosses 15 m2 large painting Untitled (2008) is a big moss-like layer. The layer comprises paint mixed with soil. It looks as if it flows over the red, yellow and blue coiled lines that are painted with spray-paint.

About the work
Grosse always paints abstract pictures and she shapes a perspective of depth in them. Untitled is so big that it fills one’s entire field of vision. It almost feels as if one is surrounded by the picture; as if one stands inside it.

The painting sucks the viewer into a universe of whirling spirals in intense colours. At the same time the viewer is confronted with the fact that this is just a two-dimensional surface which  is not possible to enter. Read more

About Katharina Grosses art

Two main threads run through Katharina Grosse’s art practice. One is her large paintings, the other her room installations. The room installations mix painterly and architectural elements. Grosse paints the exhibition space itself – the walls, the ceiling, the floor and the furniture – with spray-paint at enormous scales. Thus she transforms the exhibition spaces into three-dimensional paintings. Read more
