Matthias Weischer trained at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst i Leipzig (1995-2000). 2000-2003 he was “Meister-schüler” (student) with professor Sighard Gille. Today Weischer lives and works in Leipzig.
Like other alumni from the Leipzig Hochschule, Weischer works with figurative painting. Like Tilo Baumgärtel, David Schnell and Tim Eitel, all of whom are represented in ARKEN’s Collection, he explores realism in painting. The foundation in a recognisable reality is twisted so that the depicted spaces and architectural structures at times seem to approach the abstract.
As have other painters from the Leipzig Hochschule, Weischer has exhibited diligently in recent years. Venues include Museum der Bildende Künste in Leipzig (2003, 2005 and 2006), Künstlerhaus Bremen (2004), The 51st Venice Biennial, Musée d’Art Contemporain de Nîmes and Cleveland Museum of Art (2005), Kunstverein Ulm and Sammlung Essl in Klosterneuburg (2006) and Gallerie EIGEN + ART in Berlin (2002, 2004 and 2006).
