Tilo Baumgärtel studied at Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig (1991-98). 1998-2000 he was a "Meisterschüler" under Professor Arno Rink.
Baumgärtel works in figurative painting, like other alumni of Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig. He and Matthias Weischer, David Schnell and Tim Eitel, all of whom are represented in ARKEN's Collection, explore realism in painting in very different ways. The starting point in a recognisable reality is twisted, at times giving the paintings overly realistic, dreamy or almost abstract qualities.
Like other painters from the Leipzig Academy, Baumgärtel exhibits frequently, e.g. at Kunstraum B2, Galerie Kleindienst, LIGA in Leipzig (2000), "Neuer Realismus" at Galerie Rothamel in Erfurt and at Museum der Bildenden Künste in Leipzig (2002) and in 2003 at Galleri Nicolai Wallner in Copenhagen as well as the exhibition "Future - Five Artists from Germany" at SandroniRey in Los Angeles.
In 2002 Baumgärtel won Kunstpreis Sachsen LB.
Baumgärtel is represented in Museum der Bildenden Künste in Leipzig.
