WHY TEACH ARCHITECTURE?
Architecture is everywhere – where you live, go to school, do sports and get together with friends and family. Architecture is buildings, plazas, urban spaces and landscapes. Because we are always surrounded by architecture, it’s important to learn what architecture means.
ARCHITECTURE HAS AN IMPACT
To truly understand how architecture impacts us, we need to move through it from one space to the next. Seeing, touching, smelling and walking on architecture, we experience it with all our senses and our whole body. Architecture impacts us in different ways, depending on materials and shapes. What emotions do architecture trigger in you?
HOW CAN I USE ARCHITECTURE IN THE CLASSROOM?
A visit to ARKEN starts with concrete observations and experiences in the architecture of ARKEN. What materials were used to build the museum? How do the surfaces feel? Where does the light come from? Why are some rooms big and other rooms small? We use the body as a gauge and a mirror to intervene with vision and enhance our experience of space,
DIGITAL ARCHITECTURE WORKSHOPS
In the digital workshop we work with Comic Life software, which allows students to put together a narrative about their favorite space in the museum as a digitally collaged comic in images and text. The comic is presented to the rest of the class and posted on the website, so other kids from other schools can see it, too.
