A jungle of knitted sculptures made from plastic bags hangs from the ceiling and spreads across the floor, accompanied by a multitude of imaginative ceramic figures and linoleum prints in colossal formats. Here, images and words swirl in and out of each other with a level of detail that invites exploration into every corner of the artist’s mind.
Norms and Creativity
For artist Kenneth Rasmussen (b. 1972), art is a way to find balance, release the mental clutter, and give form to his experiences and impressions that can be shared with others and inspire them. His art speaks of his own life as a person with special needs, while also being full of facets and glimpses of everyday life, both the good and the bad, that he shares with the rest of us. Where and when do we fit into society’s norms? Do we carve out a place for ourselves in life through others' concepts of what is normal, or by taking life into our own hands? What does creativity mean in a society full of systems, digitalization, and consideration for the majority? Through his works, Rasmussen expresses a personal and thoughtful social critique while simultaneously creating wild art in large formats.
From Mental Clutter to Healing Art
Kenneth Rasmussen’s art revolves around spontaneous and free knitting with shredded plastic, which occupies entire rooms as a jungle of fluid and abstract elements. In his own words, he ‘lets his fingers do the walking’ to channel his mental clutter through the materials and give them an artistic form. He also creates linoleum prints, often in enormous sizes. He spontaneously fills the picture surface with a myriad of figures, scenes, and statements – a joyful walk through surreal and expressive stories. The images form a stream of consciousness with its own internal order, processing everyday impressions, expressing human needs, and giving voice to the challenges that life with special needs presents. In Rasmussen’s ceramic sculptures, the great figures of art, fairy tales, and imaginative animal creatures are shaped and interpreted with tenderness and humor.
For Rasmussen, art is healing. The artistic process creates balance in body and mind, and it gives his mental clutter an aesthetic form and an activist language. We, who step into his works, are essentially wandering through another person’s inner life.
