In the exhibition Come Hell or High Water, SUPERFLEX invites the audience into a future where the sea shapes both our world and our actions. Through their art, they cast a critical light on global market forces and the production and working conditions of ordinary people. Experience, among other things, three films in the exhibition—Kwassa Kwassa, Two Suns, and All Is Water – each of which has its own connection to the sea.

Kwassa Kwassa, 2015
In 2014, the population of the island of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean voted to become part of France and thereby the EU. This has made the island a destination for refugees from the nearby island of Anjouan. The film depicts the construction of fiberglass boats, which are used both for fishing and for smuggling refugees. “Kwassa Kwassa” means “unstable boat” — and over the years, thousands of refugees have drowned on the վտանգous journey.

Two Suns, 2024
From 1946 to 1958, the United States tested 67 atomic bombs in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean. One observer described the sight of the bombs as “two suns in the sky.” The radioactive waste on the islands was later collected and stored in a gigantic concrete dome called “The Tomb.” The Marshall Islands are now at risk of flooding due to rising sea levels. Two children, Ahti and Aapo, talk about the atomic bombs while taking apart a small model of the dome to use its parts to design a playground for humans, sharks, and fish alike.

All is Water, 2023
All is Water explores consciousness from a non-human perspective and connects it to the idea that water links all life on the planet. In the film, a text written and narrated by an AI is heard — it reflects on the limitations of science and explores the consciousness of fish. The film was shot in Corsica, where the fish Chromis chromis hatches in the waters around Superflex’s Fish Cubes. These are floating structures designed to serve as underwater habitats and to investigate how architecture influences the social behavior of fish.

The films are shown consecutively Tuesday–Sunday from 11.00, every hour on the hour during the museum’s opening hours. Please note that screenings may occasionally be cancelled due to events.

If you want to dive further into the universe you can listen to the podcasts series Interspecies Café – a podcast where SUPERFLEX’s explores of “Interspecies Living.” Scan the QR code and take a walk in the landscape around the museum or along the beach while listening to experts share their thoughts on coexistence in nature with other species. You can also let yourself be hypnotized and try to experience the world as a fish.
The podcast series features researchers Katarina Hovden, Rikke Andreassen, and Alex Jordan, as well as hypnotist Tommy Rosenkilde. All episodes are in English.
