1. The trio Jakob Fenger (b. 1968), Rasmus Nielsen (b. 1969) and Bjørnstjerne Reuter Christiansen (b. 1969) met as fellow students at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. In 1993 they founded the artist group SUPERFLEX. From the outset they wanted to work as an activist and ‘expanded collective’. Both then and now their works cast a critical light on global market forces and on the conditions of production and labour around the world. In recent years the trio have taken the idea of expanded collaboration even further in their latest practice. Here they also seek to bring the perspectives, inner lives and conditions of animals and plants onto an equal footing with those of humans. For SUPERFLEX, the best idea might just come from a fish, as the artists themselves say.
2. You can experience SUPERFLEX in Copenhagen’s urban space: the award-winning Superkilen in Nørrebro, which opened in 2011. Here, residents were involved in the artistic process of deciding what should be placed in the then-new green communal areas and network of new bicycle paths. Havneholmen Metro station is also decorated by SUPERFLEX, who underground play with our perception of gravity: the ceiling becomes the floor. The floor becomes the ceiling. Time speeds up and slows down. SUPERFLEX wants to send you, as a passenger, on a journey through time and space—and play with the idea of a world where the laws of nature constantly change.
3. What do Tate Modern in London, Museo Jumex in Mexico City, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan have in common? They are all places where SUPERFLEX has exhibited. From 07.05.26, SUPERFLEX will exhibit at Arken.
